Champions League Round of 16 First Leg Tips and Preview Part Two
Last week saw the first four Round of 16 first leg games played in the Champions League and this week, the second batch of first leg games will be played in the competition. Teams involved this week include Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona, all of whom have won the tournament over the last 15 years or so.
But before we bring you the round up of last week’s games, plus our tips for this weeks matches, if you are quick you could possible snap up one of Coral Sports best ever New Player Offers which is currently available prior to kick off in the Chelsea v Barcelona Champions League Clash.
Coral’s Champions League Welcome Offer
If you are not a Coral customer, then today may well be the best day for you to sign up as Coral are offering one of their best ever value New Player Offers on tonight’s big Champions League clash between Chelsea and Barcelona at Stamford Bridge.
All you need to do is log into Coral, register and then deposit some cash into your account. Once you have completed this, head on over to the betting on the Chelsea v Barcelona game and then look for the specialist bets. You will find that there is an offer for new customers to back any goal being scored in the game by either team at odds of 50/1 (maximum stake for this bet is £1).
You can then place your £1 bet on this option and sit back and enjoy the game knowing that if either Chelsea or Barcelona score a goal at any point in the game, you will be £50 better off at the end.
However, that is not all, if the game somehow finishes in a 0-0 draw (and history suggests that this is unlikely) then Coral will offer you a free £5 bet as a consolation prize, so you cannot lose even if your bet loses.
This offer is only available today, although Coral do tend to offer similar offers on other big matches throughout the year to attract new customers into signing up. However, what makes this offer so special is the huge odds of 50/1 on offer, which is more than all other Coral starter bonus offers I have seen so far on the site.
Champions League Round of 16 First Leg Review
The first four matches in the Champions League Round of 16 took place last week on Tuesday and Wednesday and they panned out as follows:
- FC Basel 0
- Manchester City 4 (Gundogan 14,53, Bernardo Silva 18, Aguero 23)
It was a straightforward win for Manchester City as a double from Ilkay Gundogan and single strikes from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero were enough to hand FC Basel a 4-0 defeat. City got off to a blistering start and after a quarter of the first leg, were already 3-0 up and cruising. Basel tried to battle their way back into it but were met by solid resistance by City’s back line making the second leg a formality.
- Juventus 2 (Higuain 2, 9 (pen))
- Tottenham 2 (Kane 35, Eriksen 71)
Spurs started atrociously in Turin gifting Juventus a set piece goal barely a minute into the game then conceding a penalty on nine minutes to go 2-0 behind. However after that they bounced back superbly to pull one back through Harry Kane but then they gave Juve another penalty after Aurier’s poor tackle on Douglas. Higuain stepped up but hit the bar and it was a miss that would prove crucial as Spurs dominance eventually say Christian Eriksen convert a free kick to level the tie up nicely.
- Real Madrid 3 (Ronaldo 45 (pen), 83, Marcelo 86)
- Paris St Germain 1 (Rabiot 33)
PSG were left kicking themselves after two late goals robbed them of what would have been a good result in the first leg in the Bernebeu. Rabiot gave the visitors a deserved first half lead but crucially they could not hang on until half time when Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty to draw Real level. Two late goals, one from Ronaldo and one from Marcelo, gave Real a huge advantage heading into the second leg.
- FC Porto 0
- Liverpool 5 (Mane 25,53,85, Salah 29, Firmino 69)
Liverpool eclipsed the record set by Manchester City of the biggest away win by an English club in the knockout phase of the Champions League with this rout of FC Porto. A Sadio Mane hattrick was the foundation for the win, with goals from Salah and Firmino adding further embellishments to the scoreline. In truth, Liverpool could have won by even more and the second leg at Anfield in a few weeks’ time is now a formality.
Champions League Round of 16 – 20th & 21st February – 1st Legs
- Bayern Munich v Besiktas
Besiktas could be without several key players for this game and they will miss Cenk Tosun, a January transfer to Everton, who spearheaded their attack in the group stages. Wagner Love, the veteran Brazilian or ex-Man City striker Alvaro Negredo could replace him in the team. Bayern are the hot favourites to win this one though and it is not difficult to see why given their superb Bundesliga form and Champions League pedigree and in truth, the German side should win this at a canter.
Our Tip – Correct Score – Bayern Munich to win 3-0 – 11/2 with Coral Sport
- Chelsea v Barcelona
This is a match up that could have graced the final and will be the 16th times these two teams have met, with each team winning five games and there also being five drawn matches. Chelsea’s recent form isn’t great but they did look back to their best at the weekend in the FA Cup, but Barcelona have only lost three times this season and look a very hard team to beat, while still retaining a real attacking threat. As such, I think this will be a closely fought contest and likely end in a draw.
Our Tip – Match Result – Chelsea v Barcelona – Draw – 5/2 with Coral Sport
- Sevilla v Manchester United
Sevilla twice drew with Liverpool in the group stage of the tournament prior to Christmas so they have experience of English sides already this year, but they face a Manchester United side that are a much better defensive unit than Liverpool and who won’t offer Sevilla the same lifelines the Anfield club did. Jose Mourinho’s men come into this game on the back of a fine FA Cup win and I think they’ll do enough to grab the win here, although I think it will be by a 2-1 or 3-1 scoreline.
Our Tip – Man Utd to win and both teams to score – 17/4 with Coral Sport
- Shakhtar Donetsk v AS Roma
Shakhtar Donestk are now one of just three sides to beat Manchester City this season with a victory over Pep Guardiola’s men in the group stages. They face a Roma side that topped a group with Chelsea and Atletico Madrid in it and who have shown some real quality in this tournament at times. This is a tough one to judge but I think Roma’s performances of late have not been of the highest quality so I am backing the Ukranian’s to snatch a narrow win here to take to Rome for the second leg.
Our Tip – Match Result – Shakhtar Donetsk to win – 29/20 with Coral Sport
