Dirty Dancing Slot Review
One of the most iconic films of the 1980s, Dirty Dancing has finally made its way into the world of slots courtesy of the brains at Playtech. This simple tale of a young girl, Baby, heading reluctantly off to summer camp with her parents and falling for the camp’s handsome dance instructor and performer (Johnny) was a smash hit success, not just because of the on-screen chemistry between the two leads, Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze, but because of a pulsating soundtrack that promised us the “Time of Our Lives” and delivered on it.
It’s been 30 years since the film first hit cinemas across the globe and what better way to celebrate that anniversary than by releasing a fantastic new slot game based on the movie. Playable right now at Bet365 Casino, Dirty Dancing captures the essence and feel of late 1950s America quite beautifully in the slot, while featuring a trio of the key characters from the film; Frances (Baby) Houseman, Johnny Castle and his original dance partner at the camp, Penny.
The Dirty Dancing slot features 5 reels with four symbols displayed on each and there are a total of 40 paylines in play. The paylines are not selectable so you can wager from £0.40 up to a maximum of a massive £1,000 per spin, which makes this slot suited to all players, from smaller stakes gamers, to the biggest of high rollers. However that is not all as the slot also boasts two big progressive jackpots, one named after Johnny and one named after Baby. The lower value symbols on the reels are the usual playing card low symbols (from 10 through to the Ace) and the higher value symbols include a radio, a red motor car and of course, the main characters from the film.
Dirty Dancing Key Features
The first key features is the Wild symbol and this is Johnny Castle, the famous dance instructor and Baby’s love interest. He can substitute for any of the lower value symbols to create winning paylines and is also the highest value of all the symbols on the reels offering you the chance to win up to 125 times your stake if you can land five of these Wild symbols on a single payline.
What is interesting in the Dirty Dancing slot is that there are no dedicated scatter symbols in play. Instead all the different bonus games, including the free spins bonus, are triggered at random as you play through the base game. This of course means that the longer you play, then the more features you will be likely to trigger, and with this being a medium to higher variance slot, you need solid bankroll management to enjoy the best of the game.
There are a good number of bonus games that you can trigger from the base game however and the first of theses is the Mambo Free Games feature. When this is triggered a wheel will appear and you can spin this wheel to receive a bonus. This can come in the form of additional free spins (3, 4 or 5 can be won) or a 2x multiplier for all your wins in the bonus round and the ability to have Dancing Wilds on each of your free spins. You keep spinning the bonus wheel and building up your free spins and other bonuses until you land on the Collect section, which gives you an additional 2 free spins and then starts your bonus round.
Of all the bonuses in the Mambo Free Games feature the Dancing Wilds are the most potentially lucrative as these are stacked on the reels and occupy all four positions on the reel for each free spin. The more of these Dancing Wilds you can land on the reels, particularly over the first three reels, then the more chance there is of your Free Spins bonus earning you a sizeable reward.
The second feature you can trigger at random in the base game is the Dirty Dancing Bonus. This is a pick me game where you select boxes which reveal either cash prizes or other items. If you can collect three of the items, you will advance onto the next round of the feature which has bigger prizes to be won. There are a total of six stages which you can play through and if you manage to play through them all, then you activate the Time of My Life Jackpot Round.
This is crucial as in this round you will win one of the two progressive jackpot prizes available, the larger Johnny progressive jackpot, or the smaller Baby progressive jackpot. All you need to do is open the boxes by clicking on them to reveal a Johnny or Baby symbol. The first symbol you pick three times will be the jackpot that you win.
The third feature you can activate in the base game is the Whirling Wilds feature. When this is triggered Baby and Johnny will appear on screen dancing and as they do, they will dance across the reels and turn between two and six symbols on the reels Wild. If you can land a higher number of Wilds especially on a single payline, then this can be a lucrative bonus to trigger in the base game.
With it’s somewhat garish neon pink colouring, Dirty Dancing captures the essence of the eighties and the film very nicely but it does have a few niggly issues. Firstly, the main characters are not actually involved in the slot a great deal, apart from those bonus rounds and secondly the classic musical score that made the film such a hit is almost completely absent. There is a nice 50s style soundtrack that plays along with the reels, but it doesn’t really capture the true feel of the film.
