Hook’s Heroes Slot Review
I’m not quite sure of the entire inspiration behind NetEnt’s Hook’s Heroes slot, the obvious one is the famous Peter Pan story, but this slot is presented in such a way as to remind me more of a school production of the story, with children playing all the lead roles including that of he famous Captain Hook himself.
The game is playable right now at the popular Leo Vegas Casino and what you will get when you load up the game is a slot that reminds me very much of the PlayStation game Little Big Planet, with its model sets and rather child-like presentation. That’s not a bad thing though as it works superbly well with this theme. You have the backdrop of a rather stormy sea, with a desert and island and boat perched on top of the seas, with the sun peeking out from cloudy skies above. It’s all rather cute but has been animated superbly.
Playing alongside this is a rather jaunty and cheerful Caribbean style calypso song which is your accompaniment when spinning the reels. Again, this is perfectly judged and unlike some slot soundtracks, is a tune you will find enhances the experience, rather than one you are looking to mute after a few minutes.
The set up of the slot is a 5×3 reel game with a total of 20 pay lines in play on each spin. This number is fixed and means that the minimum wager is £0.20 per spin, but you can increase that up to £200 per spin by increasing your coin value and the Bet Level to their maximum values. That means that the Hook’s Heroes slot is one that players of all bankroll sizes can play and enjoy.
The single line jackpot is just 900 coins, but you can win considerably more than that by combining multiple line wins together, it is possible to win over 100,000 coins as the top prize in the slot in this manner.
There is an Autoplay feature available for you to use if you want to spin whilst doing something else, and the Max Bet button will allow you to bet the maximum amount for your current level and bet size at a single touch.
There are a total of ten standard symbols on the reels. The lower value symbols are the playing card lows which go from 10 through to the Ace and which offer a range of wins from 5 coins up to 200 coins.
The higher value symbols are five characters from the story and these are all children dressed as Captain Hook’s motley crew. You can land wins from 20 coins up to 900 coins with these symbols on the reels. All wins start at three symbols on a pay line or more.
There are two other symbols on the reels, the Wild and Scatter symbols and these unlock the main key features of the slot as we shall explore below.
Hook’s Heroes Slot Key Features
The Wild symbol is Captain Hook himself and he is easily identifiable with his hook for a hand and the word Wild written across the brim of his pirates hat. There’s no payout just for Wild symbols, he simply replaces all other standard symbols on the reels to produce additional or greater value winning lines.
The main thrust of the bonus features however comes in the Free Spins bonus games, which are activated when you land three or more of the crocodile scatter symbols anywhere across the reel. The crocodile fits into this story as it was a crocodile which saw the erstwhile captain lose his hand, which he then replaced with a hook.
If you land two scatters on the reels then you trigger the Feature Spins bonus. This feature awards you one single Feature Spin with a randomly chosen feature. This spin will then pay out additional cash to any that you won on the original spin.
However, three or more Scatter symbols triggers Free Spins as we have already discussed but with this bonus there is a difference. For your free spins, you get to activate one of three features for your free spins and the feature you choose will decide how many free spins you receive.
The Fairy Feature will give you 7 Free Spins and in this feature each spin will see a random number of Overlay Wilds placed on the reels in random positions. They will hold their position for that spin and can lead to some sizeable payouts when landed in conjunction with some of the higher value symbols.
If you select the Mermaid Feature then you get 10 Free Spins and in this bonus, all your wins during free spins are subject to a 2x multiplier. That is unless your win contains a Wild symbol, in which case the multiplier on that win is doubled to 4x the standard amount.
The third and final feature is the Pirate Feature which sees you receive 15 Free Spins and in this game, there are no bet lines in play. Instead, you win by having the same symbol anywhere across the reels. They do not even have to be on consecutive reels in order to trigger the win. For this bonus round, there are no Wild symbols in play on the reels.
What is nice about the bonus games in the Hook’s Heroes slot is that if you land four or five scatter symbols to trigger free spins, then you actually get to select more than one of the features to play through. So if you land four scatters you could pick the Fairy Feature and then the Mermaid Feature and play through both features one after the other. Land five scatters and you can play through all three features, or you can play the same feature repeatedly. The choice is yours.
The Fairy and Pirate Features offer wins of up to 45x your stake, but in the Mermaid feature you can win up to 180x your stake (thanks to the multiplier available on the Wild symbols).
Hook’s Heroes is a medium to lower variance game that is charming to play and great fun at the same time. The bonus features aren’t that easy to trigger though, but they are rewarding when you land them, especially if you can trigger them with 4 or 5 scatters instead of just the three.
