Arena of Gold Slot Review
All41 Studios are one of a number of companies that have struck production deals with Isle of Man-based slots giants Microgaming. Over the last two years, these companies have been producing a steady flow of games exclusively for Microgaming and following on from the success of their Book of Atem and Le Kaffee Bar slots amongst others, the latest offering from All41 Studios has now hit casinos and it is called Arena of Gold.
The slot is based in Roman times and focuses on gladiatorial combat, although in a more revered than exploitative way. It is a medium variance slot, which makes a nice change from the influx of higher volatility games we have had in recent times from Microgaming’s partners, and it also features not just a base game jackpot of around 2,500x your bet, but also three in game jackpots, the largest of which is 1,000x your stake.
So is it the dreaded thumbs down and the death knell for the Arena of Gold slot, or does it live to fight another day with a very positive thumbs up? We decided to take a closer look at the game to find out.

Let’s now turn our attention back to the new game from All41 Studios and take a look at its key information.
Key Information for the Arena of Gold game
- Developed By – All41 Studios (for Microgaming)
- Mobile – Yes
- Number of Reels – 5×3
- Number of Pay Lines – 25 Paylines
- Minimum Bet – 0.10
- Maximum Bet – 50.00
- Free Spins Bonus? – Yes
- Other Bonuses? – Yes
- Standard Jackpot – 2,500x
- Progressive? – No – but there are three jackpots available in the game.

One positive thing to note from the key information is the minimum bet price of just 0.10 per spin for a 25 pay line game. This is a trend which is appearing more and more in Microgaming slots and it does mean that players are not forced to cover every line on a pay line-based slot, which makes the game more appealing to players that like to play for smaller stakes. The standard jackpot is what is theoretically possible in Free Spins
Theme and Presentation
The theme of the Arena of Gold slot is the Roman civilisation and in particular, their penchant for gladiatorial combat in massive arenas. You only have to look at the size of the Coliseum in Rome to understand how popular these bloodthirsty ‘games’ once were. Fortunately, there’s a bit more circumspection rather than gore in All41 Studio’s approach to the game and while benign, the slot still looks and sounds very nice.
The sound is somewhat triumphant and does its best to echo the trumpets and marching beat that seems to be the common theme in Roman entertainments. The graphics are simple, but effective and nicely done and the animations are slick. Overall, this is a slot that does tick the right boxes with how it looks and sounds.
The symbols on the slot are very easy to follow. The lower value symbols are the now ubiquitous playing card symbols, from the jack through to the ace and they offer wins from 0.3x to 3x your total bet. I would have liked to have seen something more Roman-themed here, perhaps Roman numerals instead of playing card symbols, but I suppose these symbols are now universally recognised as lower value symbols so it is hard to break away from that.
There are also four Roman gladiators that are the higher value symbols and these have different weapons and are dressed in different coloured clothes to differentiate between them. There are orange, green, blue and red and gold gladiators and they increase in value in that order offering wins from 0.5x to 20x your total stake.
The Roman Emperor is the Wild symbol and this can be stacked on the reels to help you land some wins (and if frequently does help you pick up plenty of mid to lower value wins in the game). There are no multipliers attached to any Wild wins unfortunately, but the number of times that the Wild does play a role in you landing a win means it is a very valuable asset to the player on the reels.
Free Spins Bonus
The Free Spins bonus game is the more difficult of the two bonus features to trigger. To access the bonus, you need to land three of the Scatter symbols on the first, third and fifth reels on a single spin. When you do, you are. given a somewhat miserly 5 Free Spins to begin with.
During Free Spins, the middle three reels will combine into one large reel and there will be supersized versions of each symbol (apart from the Wild) on the reel. Each symbol is 3×3 in size and can fill the large reel completely. This is very much in the style of the recent Wheel of Wishes progressive slot Microgaming released back in February.
You can trigger additional Free Spins by landing three Scatters on the reels during the Free Spins bonus round.
Other Bonuses and Information
The other bonus game is the Golden Re-Spin feature. This is triggered when you land six or more of the Gold Coins (complete with a cash value) on the reels on a single spin. When you trigger this bonus, you are taken to a new set of reels, on which are either more Gold Coin symbols, with cash values, multipliers or a chance to win the Mini or Mega jackpots.
You then get three free Respins of the reels. Each time you add a Gold Coin to your collection, your respin count will reset back to three. You keep spinning and adding Gold Coins until you either run out of respins, or you completely fill the reels with Gold Coins.
At the end of the bonus, if you run out of respins, your bonus cash and any modifiers or jackpots are added up and paid out. If you manage to completely fill the reels, then you win the Maxi jackpot of 1000x your stake, plus the cash amounts you have displayed on the reels.
Arena of Gold is an interesting slot that has some of the quirkiness you would only find in some of All41 Studios other releases like Le Kaffee Bar. It has some nice features and plays rather generously with a number of good size wins mixed in with the lower value ones. The three jackpots are not progressives but add a good little bonus to the game and two big bonus features mean there is plenty to keep the fans of lower to medium variance slots happy here.
