Champions League Matchday 5 Analysis And Best Betting Tips
We are back with the Champions League this week and we are now at Matchday 5 in the Group Stages. It is at this point of the campaign that things will start to become much clearer and I expect a number of teams to clinch their place in the Knockout Phase this week alongside the four teams already qualified.
Those teams are Ajax Amsterdam, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Liverpool, with the latter also having clinched top spot in their group.
The 16 games taking place across Tuesday and Wednesday this week will likely see a number of other teams added to this list, while others may be able to confirm a place in the Europa League after Christmas if they can land in third place in the group for certain.
Despite this, there are still a number of groups where it is possible that nothing will be decided this week and that three or even all four teams in the group could go into the final round of matches on Matchday 6 with a chance to make it into the knockout phase.
As always, you can enjoy a superb selection of Champions League bets, including pre-match and In Play betting at bet365 Sport, while in the United States, BetRivers Sportsbook offers superb soccer betting all year round on tournaments all over the globe, including the Champions League.

Let’s take a look at how things stand in the groups and what the games are in each of them.
Champions Leagues Groups & Matchday 5 Fixtures
- Manchester City – 9 (+8)
- Paris St Germain – 8 (+3)
- Club Brugge – 4 (-6)
- Red Bull Leipzig – 1 (-5)
Group A Matchday 5 Fixtures
- Club Brugge v Red Bull Leipzig
- Manchester City v Paris St Germain
Group A Analysis & Tips
Everything in this group could well be decided by tonight’s games. A Man City win sees them top the group and qualify. PSG would qualify even if they lose if Red Bull Leipzig beat Club Brugge. A PSG win over City would take them top of the group but Man City would also qualify if Club Brugge don’t beat Red Bull Leipzig.
For me, I’d back Man City to beat Paris St Germain and both teams to score, which is a 15/8 chance, while I would also back Red Bull Leipzig to claim a win over Brugge which is an 11/10 shot.
- Liverpool – 12 (+8)
- FC Porto – 5 (-3)
- Atletico Madrid – 4 (-2)
- AC Milan – 1 (-3)
Group B Matchday 5 Fixtures
- Atletico Madrid v AC Milan
- Liverpool v FC Porto
Group B Analysis & Tips
With Liverpool already qualified and group winners, the Reds will rotate players for their game with Porto at Anfield, but I think they will still be too strong for the Portuguese side, who were thrashed by the Reds on Matchday 2. Take Liverpool to win 2-0 here at 9/1.
The Atletico Madrid v Milan clash gives the Spanish side a chance to possibly overtake FC Porto in the table and I think they will take it against the Italians here. Take Atletico to land a win at 8/13.
- Ajax Amsterdam – 12 (+12)
- Sporting Lisbon – 6 (+2)
- Borussia Dortmund – 6 (-4)
- Besiktas – 0 (-10)
Group C Matchday 5 Fixtures
- Besiktas v Ajax (5.45pm)
- Sporting Lisbon v Borussia Dortmund
Group C Analysis & Tips
Ajax have been the team to beat in Group C and have maximum points thus far in the Group Stage and I can’t see Besiktas having the quality to stop them here, so I would take the Dutch side to land another win and confirm themselves as Group Winners at 4/11.
The Lisbon v Dortmund clash in this group is the key one as the winner will stand the best chance of progressing into the next phase and with Lisbon at home and Dortmund’s form shaky, I’d back the Portuguese side to land the win at 8/5.
- Real Madrid – 9 (+6)
- Inter Milan – 7 (+3)
- Sheriff Tiraspol – 6 (-1)
- Shakhtar Donetsk – 1 (-8)
Group D Matchday 5 Fixtures
- Inter Milan v Shakhtar Donetsk (5.45pm)
- Sheriff Tiraspol v Real Madrid
Group D Analysis & Tips
This has been a tricky group for the two big teams. Real lost at home to Sheriff Tiraspol in one of the biggest Champions League upsets in many years and if the Moldovan side can repeat that then they would be in with a great chance of qualifying.
However, I can’t see that happening here and I am backing Real Madrid to win at 2/9 and Inter Milan to do likewise at 2/7, though at those odds, it may well be worth combining them into a Group D Double bet.
- Bayern Munich – 12 (+15)
- Barcelona – 6 (-4)
- Benfica – 4 (-4)
- Dynamo Kyiv – 1 (-7)
Group E Matchday 5 Fixtures
- Dynamo Kyiv v Bayern Munich (5.45pm)
- Benfica v Barcelona
Group E Analysis & Tips
Bayern Munich just need a point to be confirmed as group winners and I am sure they will get it here against Dynamo Kyiv. They are 1/3 to land the win against the Ukrainian side and I think that is pretty much a nailed on certainty given how well Bayern have played in the tournament so far.
The other game is crucial. A win for Barcelona sees them qualify, a draw or loss and that gives Benfica a real chance to progress with Barcelona still to travel to Germany to face Bayern Munich for their last fixture while Benfica face Kyiv at home. I still feel Barcelona will do just enough to claim the win but I’d back both teams to score here too which is an 11/5 shot.
- Villarreal – 7 (+4)
- Manchester United – 7 (+1)
- Atalanta – 5 (0)
- Young Boys – 3 (-5)
Group F Matchday 5 Fixtures
- Villarreal v Manchester United (5.45pm)
- Young Boys v Atalanta
Group F Analysis & Tips
This promises to be an intriguing night of action. Manchester United come into this game having sacked their manager at the weekend and badly in need of a result and I think that while a win looks unlikely, they could well snatch a draw here, which is an appealing option at 12/5.
The other game is also crucial, especially for Atalanta who need a win to stay in touch with the teams at the top of the table, but I can see the attack-minded young Italian team grabbing the win here and they are 3/4 to do so with bet365 Sport, although I think backing Josip Ililcic to score at any time at 13/10 is a good value option too.
- Red Bull Salzburg – 7 (+2)
- Lille – 5 (0)
- Wolfsburg – 5 (-1)
- Sevilla – 3 (-1)
Group G Matchday 5 Fixtures
- Lille v Red Bull Salzburg
- Sevilla v Wolfsburg
Group G Analysis & Tips
This is a group which I can see going right down to the final game and all four teams having a chance of progressing into the next phase with a win in that last group game. That’s because in the first game, I think Lille and Red Bull Salzburg will draw, which is a 23/10 option with bet365 Sport.
However, in the second game, I feel that the Spaniards Sevilla, who have underperformed in this tournament so far, should have more than enough quality to get the job done against Wolfsburg, at 7/10 for the Sevilla win, and if that is the case, then any team from the group could qualify on the final matchday.
- Juventus – 12 (+7)
- Chelsea – 9 (+5)
- Zenit St Peterburg – 3 (0)
- Malmo FF – 0 (-12)
Group H Matchday 5 Fixtures
- Chelsea v Juventus
- Malmo FF v Zenit St Petersburg
Group H Analysis & Tips
Juventus have already qualified from this group and Chelsea just need one more point to be assured of doing the same (or for Zenit to lose or draw with Malmo) but I think the Londoners will have their focus on beating Juventus here to give themselves a chance of being top seed in the group. A 2-0 win for Chelsea is a 6/1 chance and the win is a 4/7 shot.
The other game I think will be irrelevant in terms of how the group pans out as I think Zenit will finish third regardless of the result here, but I do think the Russian side will land the win so they are available with bet365 at 17/20 to land the victory here.
