Flame Busters Slot Review

Do you remember the glorious first days of computer gaming? Here in the UK, machines like the ZX Spectrum were the first to dominate and they heralded the dawn of what has become the computer gaming industry for today. In those days, entire games were crammed into 48k of memory, a tiny amount nowadays, and as a result the games were somewhat simplistic with colourful yet simple graphics. It is this era that is celebrated on Thunderkick’s imaginative new slot Flame Busters.

What you have here is a 5×3 reel slot that is set out in a design of a building and each of the windows in the building represents a space on the reels. It is through the windows that the symbols are displayed. Outside the building, three firefighters are ready with their hoses to put out any fires on each of the three levels of the building visible. There are no paylines but instead there are 243-ways to win on each spin and the game is set against the backdrop of an 8-bit cityscape with a jaunty digitised soundtrack to play along to.

Wagers cost from 10p to £100 per spin and there is a top jackpot available of 5,280 times your stake, that is a large sum for what looks a relatively innocuous slot, but don’t be fooled. Flame Busters is a high variance games, which means wins are generally tougher to come by and big wins even more so, but when you do hit a big win, it can be well worth the wait.  The symbols on the reels are five different coins (which will look familiar to Mario fans) which are the lower value options. Higher symbols include a goat, pirate, robot, wizard, Roasty McFry the firefighter and the station’s cat Toasty, which pleasingly is the highest value of the high symbols.

Flame Busters Key Features

The first main feature of the Flame Busters slot is the Wild symbol. This is simply a “W” symbol and it serves the most basic function in this slot of substituting for other symbols to create winning paylines. However, there is also the Fire Symbol, which is called the Mystery Symbol in the game and this operates in a similar way to a Wild.

When a Fire Symbol appears (and many can appear on the reels during a single spin), a fire will burn in that particular window and at the end of the spin, the firefighters at the side of the screen will put the fire out. When they do, all the Fire symbols that were on the reels will transform into a single random symbol, which can of course lead to some sizeable wins, depending on the symbol that is transformed into and what other symbols are on the reels on that spin.

Also in the base game there is a Fire Drill feature which can be triggered randomly on any spin. When this is activated, you will see between one and five of the lower value coin symbols transform into Fire Symbols, which will then turn into another symbol once they have been extinguished in the hope of triggering you a sizeable win.

However, in truth the base game wins in the Flame Busters slot tend to be of mid to low value and it is only through activating the Free Spins bonus game that you will give yourself a chance at the larger value wins in the slot. To do this you need to land three or more of the Alarm Bell scatter symbols across the reels on a single spin. Three on a spin gives you 10 free spins, four will give you 15 free spins and the maximum five offers you 20 free spins.

Once free spins have started though, the Alarm Bell scatters still play a key role, because as you play through your free spins you can collect Alarm Bell scatters as you play and every three you collect will unlock a new Level on the building. This will reward you with 2 extra free spins each time you unlock a level. There are five additional Levels to unlock as you play through your free spins round, meaning a total of 10 additional free spins up for grabs.

However, it’s not the extra free spins that makes the bonus round potentially so lucrative, but the Coin Ignition feature. This feature means that when you activate a new level by collecting Three Alarm Bells in the bonus round, you turn one of the five coin symbols Wild. As you unlock more levels, you turn more of the coin symbols Wild until you potentially have all five coin symbols Wild on a spin. When this happens, you can trigger some massive payouts and this is where the bigger value wins on the slot can be found.  That’s because once a coin turns Wild, it remains Wild for the duration of the free spins round, offering you multiple chances at a better value win.

Editor's Review

Flame Busters is a wonderful dichotomy when it comes to slots, it is retro styled gaming at its finest, as anyone who has ever owned a machine from the ZX Spectrum up to the first PlayStation 1 or XBox will acknowledge. Yet amongst all this cutesy retro-gaming is a slot that really does pack lots of modern features including innovative bonus games and 243-ways to win rather than paylines. The result is a slot which may look innocent, but which offers some high variance gaming and the chance to win a massive 5,280x your stake jackpot, that’s a sizeable sum especially for high rollers playing at £100 a spin. This is a fun, enjoyable game though that can be enjoyed by lower stakes gamers, but beware, it does pack a bite and can burn a hole through your bankroll quickly if you are not careful.
