Champions League Semi Finals – First Leg Results

Liverpool 5 (Salah 34,44, Mane 55, Firmino 60,67)

AS Roma 2 (Dzeko 80 Perotti 84 pen)

Two late goals gave Roma hope in this tie after Liverpool stormed into a 5-0 lead thanks to goals from each of their attacking trio, Salah, Mane and Firmino. In truth, Liverpool should be home and dry but Dzeko’s finish and Perotti’s penalty give Roma at least a fighting chance in the second leg.

Bayern Munich 1 (Kimmich 27)

Real Madrid 2 (Marcelo 43, Asensio 56)

Poor finishing allied with some calamitous defending saw Bayern succumb to a 2-1 defeat at home to Real Madrid for the second year in a row in the Champions League. Bayern should have got at least a draw from this game, but Real’s clinical finishing in the face of some woeful Bayern defending puts them in a strong position heading into the second leg in Madrid.

Europa League Semi Finals – First Leg Results

Arsenal 1 (Lacazette 60)

Atletico Madrid 1 (Griezmann 81)

A fabulous rear-guard action after being reduced to 10 men after 10 minutes of this game by Atletico Madrid seemed set to restrict Arsenal to a one-goal lead, until a mistake by Laurent Koscielny handed Antoine Griezmann a golden chance to level to give Atletico a massive advantage for the return leg in Madrid.

Marseille 2 (Thauvin 14, Njie 62)

Red Bull Salzburg 0

Marseille had less shots in total, fewer shots on target and less of the ball than Salzburg, but in Dmitri Payet they had the main creative influence on the game, setting up the first for Thauvin and constantly being a threat to the Austrian side. This is a solid lead Marseille take into what could be a tricky second leg in Salzburg.

Champions League Semi Final Second Legs

Tuesday 1st May (7.45pm Kick Off)

Real Madrid (2) v (1) Bayern Munich

Real Madrid start this tie with an undoubted advantage from the first leg after some awful Bayern defending handed them two goals. Last season, Bayern lost 2-1 at home to Real but came back to earn a 2-1 scoreline in the Bernebeu after 90 minutes to force extra time. However, Arturo Vidal was sent off just 2 minutes from the end of normal time and in extra time, Real made the extra man pay, running in three goals to grab the win.

This time around, I can’t see Bayern producing a miracle comeback. Real have nothing left to aim for this season other than defending the Champions League and I think they will have learned from their awful showing against Juventus in the second leg of the quarter final at home, where they went from being 3-0 up from the first leg, to level at 3-3, needing a 98th minute penalty to claim the win.

Tip – back Real Madrid to land the win here at 13/10 with Coral Sport.

Wednesday 2nd May (7.45pm Kick Off)

AS Roma (2) v (5) Liverpool

The two late goals at Anfield give Roma at least a fighting chance, and that was all they needed in the last round against Barcelona as they earned the same 3-0 result they need against Liverpool to progress. Certainly, at a packed Stadio Olimpico, the home fans will be expectant and hoping their team can produce another miracle comeback.

My worry for Roma is that their defence never looked capable of dealing with Liverpool’s attack at Anfield and while they may adopt different tactics for this game, I can still see the Reds carving out chances, and taking them, against this Roma back line. Just one goal for Liverpool leaves Roma needing four to win, two leaves Roma needing six to win or five to force extra time. That is a tough ask against a Liverpool back line which has been much improved of late.

Tip – Back Roma to win here at 6/4 with Coral but I think it will be Liverpool that go through.

Europa League Semi Final Second Legs

Thursday 3rd May (8.05pm Kick off)

Atletico Madrid (1) v (1) Arsenal

Antonio Griezmann’s goal at the Emirates last Thursday has massively swung this tie in favour of Atletico Madrid, especially when you consider that Arsenal played most of the game against 10 men at home and could only manage to score the one goal in over 80 minutes of football.

At the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico Madrid have conceded just four goals in La Liga all season long, an incredible record and with Diego Costa back to full fitness and Atletico likely to have 11-men for much longer this time around, I can’t see any hope for the Gunners here, although it is worth noting Chelsea did beat Atletico 2-1 in the Group Stages of the Champions League here earlier this season.

Tip – Atletico Madrid should take the win here at 8/11 with Coral

Red Bull Salzburg (0) v (2) Marseille

Red Bull Salzburg will feel they are not out of this tie by any means. They beat Marseille 1-0 at home in the Group Stages of the Europa League this season and in the quarterfinals came back from a 4-2 defeat in Rome to Lazio, to beat the Roman side 4-1 at home to progress.

The Austrian side have been resolute and strong this season in the competition and while I think they have the ability to win the game on the night, my gut feeling is that Marseille are so dangerous on the counter that they will grab a goal and that could well be decisive.

Tip – My money is on this one finishing in a draw which is a 13/5 shot with Coral.
