Europa League Tips
All games in the Europa League will be played at 8.05pm on Thursday night, UK Time. The first leg scores of each of the four ties are outlined in brackets.
CSKA Moscow (1) v (4) Arsenal
Match Result Betting: CSKA to win – 12/5, Arsenal to win – 19/20, Draw – 5/2
Arsenal rampaged past CSKA at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg to open up a seemingly unassailable 4-1 lead ahead of their trip to Russia. CSKA don’t have the best of records against English sides, particularly of late and it looks like being a long night for the Russian side against an Arsenal team that is going to be primed to hit them on the counter attack.
CSKA are not a bad side, they came through against a very talented Lyon side in the last round, but they are not the greatest team defensively and they have a very aged defence, not ideal against an Arsenal side packed with pace and stamina as well as creativity.
The Gunners have put their last two opponents to the sword away from home winning 2-0 in Milan in the last round and defeating Ostersunds 3-0 in Sweden. I think Arsene Wenger will be looking at this fixture and feeling a similar result to those is not out of the question.
I’m backing Arsenal to be a winner on the night and to progress into the semis with relative ease.
Marseille (0) v (1) Red Bull Leipzig
Match Result Betting: Marseille to win – 6/5, Red Bull Leipzig to win – 19/10, Draw – 12/5
This was a very close encounter in the first leg with Timo Werner’s goal on the stroke of half time being the difference between the sides. This promises to be a very exciting match up and in truth, this is the one tie I feel may need extra time in order to secure a winner.
Marseille’s record at home in Europe this season is excellent and they have beaten some fine sides at the Velodrome, but Red Bull Leipzig have also produced some excellent wins on the road this season including a 4-1 win over Monaco in the principality plus a 3-0 win away in Naples against Napoli.
I can see this being a tight game but I do think Marseille will sneak a win and that will be either by a 1-0 scoreline (which forces extra time) or a 2-1 scoreline (which would see Red Bull Leipzig progress on the away goals rule).
Red Bull Salzburg (2) v (4) Lazio
Match Result Betting: Red Bull Salzburg to win – 23/20, Lazio to win – 2/1, Draw – 5/1
This game produced the most goals in the first leg with Lazio’s very talented attack scoring four times at home against a Salzburg side that have been somewhat difficult to beat in the Europa League this season.
That was a good win for Lazio and which means that they go into this game as strong favourites to progress, but they face a Salzburg side who are unbeaten at home in Europe this season and who have seen off some quality sides in this competition this season, against the odds in many cases.
Salzburg’s problem won’t be so much scoring goals, I think Lazio’s defence is somewhat porous in that respect, but it will be keeping a clean sheet against one of the brightest attacks in European football at the moment. If Lazio can grab just one away goal, which they are more than capable of, I think that will put the tie well beyond their hosts.
I’m backing Lazio not just to progress from this one but to win the match too as I feel if they get one goal, that will demoralise Salzburg and could then lead to Lazio winning the game relatively comfortably. The first goal will be crucial in this tie.
Sporting Lisbon (0) v (2) Atletico Madrid
Match Result Betting: Sporting Lisbon to win – 7/2, Atletico Madrid to win – 5/6, Draw – 11/5
The first leg of this tie was effectively decided by two epic howlers from Sebastian Coates and Jeremy Mathieu at the heart of the Sporting Lisbon defence. Those mistakes allowed Atletico to take a 2-0 lead in the home leg and it was a lead that they never looked like relinquishing, despite a spirited performance from Sporting at the Wanda Metropolitano.
That puts the home side really up against it here, requiring at least two goals just to force extra time and three to give themselves a chance of progressing. This against a side well versed to playing on the counter attack and with arguably the best defence in all of European soccer.
As such, I don’t think Sporting can pull this one around and given how well Atletico played away to Lokomotive Moscow in the last round, I think they will strongly fancy their chances of earning a win here. However, I am going to say that Sporting will earn themselves a battling draw on the night.
