Huge Games in the Carabao Cup for Premier League Teams This Week
We are racing through the opening rounds of the Carabao Cup at this early point of the season due to the restructuring of the season due to the late start, but this means that we have now reached the point where just 16 teams remain in the competition, or rather 15 after last night’s result and the remaining seven Fourth Round ties will be played across Wednesday and Thursday evenings this week.
What makes this exciting is the fact that there are a number of massive all-Premier League clashes lined up across the three nights. Last night Spurs took on Chelsea in an exciting encounter in London and over the next couple of nights we will see the likes of Brighton and Man Utd, Burnley and Manchester City and Liverpool and Arsenal all lock horns with one another.
We may already know the outcome of the Tottenham v Chelsea game which took place last night but there are still seven more huge games in the Carabao Cup to enjoy this week, including a number of all-Premier League clashes. First off though, we are going to take a look at how last night’s clash between Tottenham and Chelsea panned out at the Tottenham Stadium as Jose Mourinho went up against one of his former star players, Frank Lampard, in what was an exciting clash between the two London Giants.
Carabao Cup 4th Round Result
- Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea (Tottenham win 5-4 on penalties)
This was very much a game of two very different halves on Tuesday night. Chelsea began very strongly and it wasn’t long before a strong low shot from new signing Timo Werner put Frank Lampard’s side deservedly ahead. However, despite being second best for the opening 45 minutes, Spurs bounced back in the second half but left it late to equalise when Reguilon’s cross was turned home at the back post by Lamela. Penalties ensued and with Spurs scoring all their first five, Chelsea responded by netting their first four, but their fifth taker, Mason Mount, could only hit the outside of the post which meant that Spurs progressed by the narrowest of margins.
Here is how the rest of the games shape up in the competition this week.
Carabao Cup 4th Round Fixtures
Wednesday 30th September
- Newport County v Newcastle United (5.30)
- Burnley v Manchester City (7.00)
- Brighton v Manchester United
- Everton v West Ham United
Last time out in this competition, Newcastle smacked seven goals without reply past Morecambe on the road and Steve Bruce’s men will be hoping that they can be as clinical in this tricky away tie with Welsh side Newport County and in truth, it looks likely that the visitors will be the side to come out on top in this early kick off game today.
After this, it is all Premier League action starting with Burnley and Manchester City facing off at Turf Moor. Given that both sides will likely rest a number of key players for this game, the fact that City have such a huge squad (and added to it with the signing of Ruben Dias today), this makes them the hot favourites to earn the win here and to move into the quarter finals.
The third game of the night sees Brighton and Manchester United face off just days after they played out a controversial game at the AMEX. United won the league clash 3-2, thanks to a VAR-awarded penalty after full-time had been blown, in truth it was a game Brighton had dominated and deserved at least a point from. So this should be a very competitive game but I do think United’s squad depth means they are the clear favourites to progress here.
Last up we have two teams who enjoyed solid wins at the weekend in the Premier League as third placed Everton in the table take on a West Ham side that put four past a very lacklustre Wolves team. David Moyes will return to the club he made his name at, even if he will be in isolation at home, but I feel Carlo Ancelotti’s men are in such good form and will play a strong squad, that they should land the win here.
Our Correct Score Tips for Tonight’s Games
- Newport County 0-2 Newcastle United – 11/2
- Burnley 1-3 Manchester City – 10/1
- Brighton 0-2 Manchester United – 8/1
- Everton 2-0 West Ham – 8/1
Thursday 1st October
- Brentford v Fulham (5.30)
- Aston Villa v Stoke City (7.00)
- Liverpool v Arsenal
The three games on Thursday night see two Championship sides taking on Premier League opponents while in the third game, two Premier League giants who clashed only on Sunday will meet once again. First up we have a repeat of the Championship Playoff final of last season as Brentford and Fulham lock horns. The Bees will be keen for revenge against a team that beat them at Wembley a couple of months back and given Fulham’s poor start to the season, I can see them getting it.
The second game sees Championship side Stoke City travelling the short distance south to take on Aston Villa. Villa have snapped up Ross Barkley on loan from Chelsea for the season today, but he won’t be available for this game. However, after a solid start with two wins from two games, I expect the Villains to be the team progressing into the quarterfinals here.
Last up we have Liverpool taking on Arsenal once again just days after the Reds secured a 3-1 win over the Gunners at Anfield in the Premier League. The two teams will line up very differently for this game, with a number of fringe players in line for a game but I still feel that the Reds will just about have the edge in what should be another cracking contest. The teams played out a 5-5 draw in this competition last season in a similar game and this one should be equally as exciting, although I feel the home team will do enough to get the win.
Our Correct Score Tips for Thursday’s Games
- Brentford 2-1 Fulham – 17/2
- Aston Villa 2-0 Stoke City – 7/1
- Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal – 15/2
