Jack Hammer Slot Review

There was a time when gumshoe private eye comic book stories were all the rage and people waited breathlessly for the latest instalment to see how the likes of Dick Barton got on in his quest to thwart the latest villain.

Of course, that has all changed now thanks to the development of social media and online gaming that gives users instant gratification. However NetEnt have used this halcyon times for comics to produce one of the most eye-catching and innovative slots in their catalogue of games. That slot is Jack Hammer and it is available to play right now at Leo Vegas Casino.

In the slot, the player takes on the role of gritty private detective Jack Hammer, who is battling against his nemesis the evil Dr. Wuten to stop him from threatening an entire city with his devilishly devious plans.

Playable on mobile devices as well as desktop or laptop computers, the game is set at night in an unnamed American city in classic Film Noir style. The sound is somewhat sparse initially but is well used at different points in the game, especially when you trigger the wins and associated bonus features within the slot.

What immediately catches the eye though is the way the reels have been styled. While you have what looks like a 5×3 standard reel set up, each of the sections on that reel set is actually an individual reel itself. There are 25 non-selectable lines in play on each spin which gives you a minimum bet of £0.25 but if you wish you can use the Coin Value and Bet Level selectors to increase the size of your bet up to a massive £250 per spin. This means this is a game suitable for players of all bankroll levels.

What is brilliant about the reels though is that the reels resemble comic book frames and each of the symbols used, would not look out of place in a comic book. There’s no intrusive playing card low symbols here, simply a number of different symbols which tell parts of the story of how Jack Hammer is attempting to track down Dr. Wuten and thwart his evil scheme. It’s a simple approach but it works brilliantly for this particular theme.

For ease of use there is a Autoplay and Max Bet option which allows you to play the highest value bet for your coin value and bet level.

There are a total of nine different standard symbols on the reels. The lower value symbols are the flask filled with dangerous liquid, the ringing telephone, the newspaper, the car and Dr. Wuten’s airship. These symbols pay out from 5 coins up to 125 coins depending on how many you land across a winning line. Multiple line wins are possible on this slot and this can increase the cumulative value of a win on a spin markedly.

The higher value symbols are the four characters that are part of the story, the paperboy, the femme fatale, Dr. Wuten and of course Jack Hammer himself. These symbols offer better pays of between 15 coins and up to 1,000 coins on a winning line.

However these are not the only symbols on the reels as there are two more and these both lead into the key features of the slot.

Jack Hammer Slot Key Features

The first big feature of the Jack Hammer slot is the Wild symbol, which is made up in the shape of an explosion. This symbol does not have its own pays, but you can use it to substitute for all of the nine standard symbols to help create winning lines on each spin.

It is at this point that the first main feature of the Jack Hammer slot is apparent and that is when you land any win, you will immediately set in action the Sticky Win bonus.

What happens is that when you land a win on any line using three or more symbols or three or more of the Free Spins symbols, then the winning reels will stick in place on the screen. The remaining reels will then re-spin for you and if you add any more of the winning symbols to the reels, you will trigger another re-spin. This continues until you either do not land another symbol, or you completely fill the reels with the same symbol (which will result in some of the biggest wins in the game).

The Sticky Win bonus can turn what is a relatively small single line win into a much bigger win if you can add additional symbols and Wilds to that first winning combination. It is a fabulous bonus and can be responsible for some superb wins in the base game.

The other bonus to note in the slot is the Free Spin bonus and this is triggered by Dr.Wuten’s evil weapon. It can be landed anywhere across the reels, but you do need to land five or more to trigger the Free Spins bonus game. However, if you land three of these on the reels, you can use the Sticky Win bonus to respin the other reels and attempt to land more.

If you can land more, then the number of Scatters you land will determine how many free spins you get. 5 scatters triggers 10 free spins, 6 triggers 15, 7 triggers 20, 8 triggers 25 and nine or more will trigger the maximum 30 free spins.  The great news is that during Free Spins all your standard wins are subject to a 3x multiplier, which can result in some big wins.

Remember too, the Sticky Win bonus is also in play during Free Spins and this is the way you can land some of the top prizes on the slot.

What really makes Jack Hammer appeal though is that you don’t ever feel like you are too far away from a big win. The Sticky Win bonus triggers often enough in the base game to ensure that you remain interested and even Free Spins are not that difficult to land, although it should be noted that most wins tend to be small with the occasional medium value win thrown in.

In terms of sheer entertainment though, Jack Hammer is a fantastic slot and well worth a closer look.

Editor's Review

This is a fantastic slot with an innovative design that proved a smash hit when first released by NetEnt. The comic-book design of the reels is perfectly suited to the theme of the game and the fact that it has the usual embellishments you get from NetEnt, including high production values, plus a number of different bonus features, including the all-important Free Spins bonus round, means that you always have something to aim for. This is a fabulous slot with an engaging storyline and gameplay that not only follows it, but which is equally enjoyable to play.
