Manchester City Face Liverpool In Potential EPL Title Decider On Sunday

For three of the last four years, two teams have dominated the Premier League title race and they are doing the same again this season.

Manchester City currently lead the way with eight games in the title race to go. They have 73 points from their 30 games played, and they are followed in the league table by Liverpool, who have 72 points from their 30 games played.

With Chelsea 13 points adrift of Liverpool in third, it does very much look like the Premier League title will be going to the Etihad or Anfield once again and this Sunday, the two teams clash in what is likely to be a game that has a massive bearing on where the Premier League title will head at the end of the season.

Manchester City V Liverpool – A History

It took a couple of years from Jurgen Klopp being appointed Liverpool manager and Pep Guardiola coming in at Manchester City for the two teams to rise to the top levels of the English game.

However, their fierce rivalry began in 2017-18, when City won the league title, but were denied perfect winning season by being beaten by Liverpool at Anfield. The Reds then went on to knock City out of the Champions League with a 5-1 win over two legs.

The next season, City and Liverpool went head to head in one of the most memorable title races in history, with City pipping the Reds by just one point as both teams amassed 98 and 97 points respectively. Liverpool’s 97 points would have won the title in every year bar two since the Premier League began but the Reds did claim the Champions League to cap a fine season.

However, the following year, it was Liverpool’s turn to win the title as they raced away with the league and had the title sewn up by mid-March. It ended a long wait for the Reds 19th title and moved them just one behind Manchester United in the all-time list.

The following year, key injuries to Liverpool’s centre halves robbed them of their first choice players for much of the season, meaning the Reds could only finish 3rd, with City once again the clear winners of the title quite comfortably.

After a slow start, City began to take control of the title race and at one point in January held a 14-point advantage over Liverpool and the title race looked over. However, since then the Reds have been on a long winning run and have cut that deficit down to one point.

The teams met earlier this season at Anfield, the game finishing in a 2-2 draw after City twice came from behind to clinch a point.

Sunday’s game is the first of two huge games between the two which will have a massive impact on where the two domestic trophies this season will go as next weekend the two also clash at Wembley in the FA Cup Semi Final.

Manchester City v Liverpool Match Preview

Barring any injuries in their midweek Champions League games this week (Liverpool face Benfica in Portugal on Tuesday Night, while City are at home to Atletico Madrid on the same night) both teams should be at relatively full strength for the game on Sunday.

City’s biggest absence is likely to be Ruben Dias in defence who is still probably a week or so away from being fit enough to return.

Liverpool have slight doubts over Naby Keita but the Guinea international midfielder may be fit enough to play a part against Benfica in midweek and should also be fit enough to feature against City.

City have enjoyed the better of things in recent games between the teams. They beat the Reds 4-1 at Anfield last season after a 1-1 draw at the Etihad and they defeated the Champions Liverpool in July 2020 with a thumping 4-0 win over the Reds.

Liverpool’s last win over City came in a 3-1 Premier League win back in November 2019 and the Reds badly need a win here if they are to stand a real chance of taking the league title.

A win for City would leave the Reds four points behind with just seven games left to play and that may well be a gap that is too difficult to bridge, especially with the Reds having much the harder run in of the two teams.

The last ten games between the teams have seen City win three, Liverpool win three with four games drawn.

And with the two teams almost equal in the league this season, Sunday’s game should be a cracker.

  • Manchester City Possible XI – (4-3-3) – Ederson, Walker, Cancelo, Stones, Laporte, Rodri, B.Silva, De Bruyne, Foden, Grealish, Mahrez
  • Liverpool Possible XI (4-3-3) – Allison, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Van Dijk, Matip, Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago, Mane, Salah, Jota.

Betting Odds

Bet365 Sport currently have Manchester City as the 19/20 favourites to win the game with the draw an 11/4 shot and Liverpool a 13/5 chance to win the game.

However, Liverpool have won all their last nine Premier League games, while City have dropped five points in the last five games, losing to Tottenham and also being held to a draw by Crystal Palace a couple of weeks back.

City; strong form in this fixture in the most recent games, allied to them being at home, explains why the odds are strongly in their favour to win the game.

You can make a case for either team to win this game and while City are the logical pick in many ways, something tells me that Liverpool are going to pull something out of the bag here.
