Matchday 3 Of The Champions League Gets Underway Tonight

We are now approaching the midway point of this season’s UEFA Champions League Group Stages and already we are starting to see each of the eight groups take shape.

However, Matchdays 3 and 4 see two teams in each group go head-to-head, home and away, over the two sets of fixtures and after that, we tend to have a much clearer understanding of how each group will pan out in the final couple of fixtures.

Indeed, it is even possible that come the end of Matchday 4, we may well have our first teams already confirmed for the Knockout Stage of the tournament in the new year.

There are a number of teams that still have a 100% winning record after two games in the group stage, while others are seeking their first points of the campaign and the next two sets of games will be crucial for all teams in the group. Six points from these two games can make a huge difference to teams.

As always, punters will be keen to back their Champions League favourites this week and as such, all odds shown below are provided by bet365 Sport and were correct at the time of writing, but may have changed in the meantime.

Let’s take a closer look at the action taking place this week on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Champions League – Matchday 3

The tables below are after all teams have played two games so far and display points (goal difference) for each team. Kick off times are 8pm unless otherwise stated in brackets.

Tuesday 19th October

Group A

  1. Paris St Germain – 4 (+2)
  2. Club Brugge – 4 (+1)
  3. Manchester City – 3 (+1)
  4. Red Bull Leipzig – 0 (-4)

Matchday 3 Fixtures

  • Club Brugge v Manchester City (5.45pm)
  • Paris St Germain v Red Bull Leipzig

I am expecting both the big guns in this group Manchester City and PSG to win their games. Certainly the bookmakers to, with PSG 8/15 for the win and Manchester City also very short at 2/7. As such, I probably wouldn’t look to back both in the Match Result market.

A better option here mey be a correct score bet, or the flexibility offered by HT/FT bets. Personally though I’d back PSG to win and both teams to score at 7/4 and Manchester City to win their game 3-0, which is a 15/2 shot.

Group B

  1. Liverpool – 6 (+5)
  2. Atletico Madrid – 4 (+1)
  3. FC Porto – 1 (-4)
  4. AC Milan – 0 (-2)

Matchday 3 Fixtures

  • Atletico Madrid v Liverpool
  • FC Porto v AC Milan

Liverpool have made a very good start in this group but now probably face their toughest task in Atletico away, a team who have beaten them on three of the last four occasions. For Porto and Milan, it is a chance to perhaps force their way back into contention in this group with a win.

I do feel the draw is the solid option in the FC Porto v Milan game and that is a tempting 12/5 with bet365, however Atletico just have that ability to get under Liverpool’s skin and I am backing the Spanish side to earn the win here and they are 23/10 to do that.

Group C

  1. Ajax Amsterdam – 6 (+5)
  2. Borussia Dortmund – 6 (+2)
  3. Besiktas – 0 (-3)
  4. Sporting Lisbon – 0 (-5)

Matchday 3 Fixtures

  • Ajax Amsterdam v Borussia Dortmund
  • Besiktas v Sporting Lisbon (5.45pm)

I already feel that this group is set up for how it will end. I see Ajax and Dortmund qualifying and battling it out for top spot, with Besiktas and Sporting involved in a fight to see who finished third in the group.

The Ajax v Dortmund game is a close one to call but I just feel Dortmund have the slight edge here and in Haaland, a striker everyone in Europe fears, so I am taking Dortmund here at 19/10. I may do that as a double with Besiktas to land a surprise win too at 11/5.

Group D

  1. Sheriff Tiraspol – 6 (+3)
  2. Real Madrid – 3 (0)
  3. Inter Milan – 1 (-1)
  4. Shakhtar Donetsk – 1 (-2)

Matchday 3 Fixtures

  • Inter Milan v Sheriff Tiraspol
  • Shakhtar Donetsk v Real Madrid

Sheriff Tiraspol have been the surprise team of the competition so far earning wins over Shakhtar and then, incredibly, away at Real Madrid last time out to take top spot in the group and stun the world. They now face Inter Milan away and I feel their good run may come to an end here with Inter the 1/6 favourites.

Real face a tough trip to Ukraine to face Shakhtar Donetsk, a team that they have had problems with in the recent past and I can’t see them having too much joy here as I am taking the draw here which is a 3/1 chance at bet365.

Wednesday 20th October

Group E

  1. Bayern Munich – 6 (+8)
  2. Benfica – 6 (+3)
  3. Dynamo Kyiv – 0 (-5)
  4. Barcelona – 0 (-6)

Matchday 3 Fixtures

  • Benfica v Bayern Munich
  • Barcelona v Dynamo Kyiv (5.45pm)

The two top teams in this group meet in Portugal this week and I can’t see anything other than a solid win for Bayern, who for me are the class act in this group by a considerable distance. Take Bayern to win and both teams to score No at 13/8.

The other game sees a struggling Barcelona seeking their first points in the group against Dynamo Kyiv. The Spaniards should land the win here, but they are a fading force and they may well struggle to make it out the group. Back Barcelona to win 2-0 at 6/1.

Group F

  1. Atalanta – 4 (+1)
  2. Young Boys – 3 (0)
  3. Manchester United – 3 (0)
  4. Villarreal – 1 (-1)

Matchday 3 Fixtures

  • Manchester United v Atalanta
  • Young Boys v Villarreal

This is a very even group and I think the Spaniards Villarreal will feel that this is a must win game after their late defeat at Old Trafford last time out. They are 6/5 to earn the win in Switzerland against Young Boys and although they are draw specialists, I feel they will land the win here.

The other game is an intriguing one as Manchester United host an impressive Atalanta side who are very dangerous on the road, as Liverpool found out last season. United’s form at present is not great and I think Atalanta can earn something here. Take a draw which is a 3/1 shot.

Group G

  1. Red Bull Salzburg – 4 (+1)
  2. Sevilla – 2 (0)
  3. Wolfsburg – 2 (0)
  4. Lille – 1 (-1)

Matchday 3 Fixtures

  • Red Bull Salzburg v Wolfsburg (5.45pm)
  • Lille v Sevilla

This is another very tight group but I do feel that Salzburg have been the best team in it so far this season and at 21/20 to beat a lacklustre Wolfsburg side at home, I think that is probably one of the better value home win bets available in the competition tonight.

In the other game, Sevilla have drawn both their games in the group so far and I think that they may make it 3 out of 3 against a Lille side who have also drawn one but lost once but who at home I feel are a much sterner prospect. Take the draw here at 23/10.

Group H

  1. Juventus – 6 (+4)
  2. Chelsea – 3 (0)
  3. Zenit St Petersburg – 3 (+3)
  4. Malmo – 0 (-7)

Matchday 3 Fixtures

  • Chelsea v Malmo
  • Zenit St Petersburg v Juventus

Chelsea should not have too many problems getting past Malmo who have lost their previous two games 3-0 and 4-0 and I am expecting Chelsea to do likewise here. Take Chelsea to land a 4-0 win at 6/1 with bet365.

The other game is more tricky to predict with Juventus taking on Zenit St Peterburg in Russia. The Russian side have been tough to beat this season and I think Juventus may find that out here as they are not in great form themselves. A draw at 23/10 looks a solid bet for this game.
