Merlin’s Magic Respins Slot Review
Last week we took a look at NextGen Gaming‘s popular Merlin’s Million’s slot and while we were impressed with several factors, we felt that it lacked a lot of value for players and we weren’t blown away with the range of features on offer in the slot itself either. This week, the famous vizier of King Arthur’s court returns in the Merlin’s Magic Respins slot, which was the original of the two games and was the first to introduce the SuperBet feature. So which of the two games, which are essentially both very similar offers punters the best deal, or are both beset with the same issues given that they are very similar styles of game. So before you head to Bet365 Casino to play the slot, let’s find out a little more about it.
The first thing you’ll note is that the slots are set up almost identically with the same 5×4 reel layout used in both and the same number of fixed paylines in both (50 in total). There’s a wider range of bets available in the Merlin’s Magic Respins game however as you can wager coins from £0.02 up to £4.00 per payline, which means that you can get the reels spinning from as little as £1.00 up to a maximum bet of £200, which is a far wider betting range than on the other slot. You can increase the value of the bet, and trigger multipliers on wins completed with Wild symbols, by electing to use the SuperBet feature, which we will explain in more detail below.
The backdrop for the slot is Merlin’s secret laboratory, packed with potions and all manner of scientific instruments and this backdrop is beautifully done. The same level of care is afforded to the symbols on the reels with the playing card low symbols once again in evidence. There are a total of four higher value symbols which offer a variety of wins up to around 500 coins, however it should be noted that most of the wins you will experience will tend to be considerably smaller than this. There is also no gamble feature available on the Magic Respins slot compared to the Merlin’s Millions game.
Merlin’s Magic Respins Slot Key Features
The big feature of the Merlin’s Magic Respins slot is the SuperBet option. You can activate this before any spin and if you do then on any subsequent spin, if you trigger the Wild Respins feature (which we’ll explain in more detail below) then you will trigger not just one, but up to five respins each time the bonus is triggered. In addition, the higher the level of the SuperBet option you select (and the higher the premium you pay) then the greater the value of the top prizes you can win on each of these Wild Respins.
The problem with the SuperBet feature is that it is a costly option to play with. Even just the first level will double your bet size (which if your bet was £1, would make the Superbet option £2) However to play at the highest levels you are going to have to pay seven times your standard stake. As such, you have to weigh up carefully whether the benefit it offers on the Wild Respins feature in terms of extra spins and increased potential wins, is worth paying a 700% premium on every spin that you play.
There are two features in the game, but you can only access both if you have SuperBet in play. That is because the Wild Respins feature is only active when you have the SuperBet bonus going. This feature allows you to respin the reels between 1x and 5x when you land a full stack of Merlin Wild symbols on the middle reel during the base game. During your respins, if you land another stack of Merlin Wilds on a different reel, then you earn more respins and that stack of Wilds is also held in place for the duration of the bonus and this is the best way to trigger the higher value wins in the feature. Land five of the Wild Merlins across the reels, rather than vertically, then you win the biggest jackpot in the base game of 1,000 coins.
The other feature, which you can access whether you have SuperBet enabled or not is the Free Spins bonus game which is triggered when you land three or more of the Cauldron scatter symbols across the reels. For this you receive seven free spins and during the bonus round, Merlin will use his staff to enchant random symbols on the reels to turn them Wild. He can turn complete Reels Wild using this method during the free spins to give you a better chance of a bigger value win.
If you had a look at our Merlin’s Millions slot review last week, then you’ll instantly recognise the look and feel of Merlin’s Magic Respins. The two games are cut from the same cloth but are slightly different cosmetically and in terms of some of the bonus features. As beautifully presented as the other Merlin’s slot, this slot however suffers from the same problem in that the big SuperBet feature just isn’t worth the extra money it costs. Take that out and the chance of the bigger value wins and you have a slot that looks and sounds great but doesn’t offer a huge amount of substance beyond that and which, worst of all, isn’t great value to play for the most part.
