Premier League Matchday 18+19 Preview and Tips

This coming weekend and the following Wednesday and Thursday, bracketing the Christmas period, there will be two sets of Premier League games, Matchday 18 takes place from Friday through to Sunday this weekend and then Matchday 19 follows swiftly on starting on Boxing Day and finishing the day after.

With six points up for grab, the potential for teams at the top and bottom of the table to improve their lot is great, especially with another six point haul available across the weekend of the 29th-30th December, and then Matchday 21 from the 1st to the 3rd January, the final set of fixtures before the start of the FA Cup Third Round.

Matchday 18 Fixtures

  • Wolves v Liverpool

This is a tricky trip for the Reds against a side who have drawn with Man City, Arsenal, Everton and Man Utd this season and beaten Chelsea. Liverpool though are in superb form and will know a win is a must to keep up the pressure on City. I think they will need their defence, but will get it.

Full Time Result – Liverpool to win – 1/2

Correct Score –  Wolves 1-3 Liverpool – 14/1

  • Arsenal v Burnley

After a poor defeat away to Southampton, the Gunners defensive frailties were laid bare once again but I don’t think this will matter against a struggling Burnley side. In fact, I am backing Arsenal to bounce back with a very strong result here.

Full Time Result – Arsenal to win – 2/9

Correct Score – Arsenal 3-0 Burnley – 15/2

  • Bournemouth v Brighton

This should be a good competitive south coast derby but I feel Brighton could be set to cause an upset. Bournemouth’s form of late isn’t great and their confidence has taken a beating and I can see this talented Brighton side doing enough to take advantage of that.

Full Time Result – Away Win – 16/5

Correct Score – Bournemouth 0-1 Brighton – 12/1

  • Chelsea v Leicester City

This is the middle fixture between two games with Manchester City for Leicester and in truth I can’t see them getting anything from this one either. Chelsea are very dominant at home as Manchester City found out earlier in December, so I am expecting a standard Chelsea victory.

Full Time Result – Chelsea to win – 1/3

Correct Score – Chelsea 3-1 Leicester City – 12/1

  • Huddersfield v Southampton

I think Huddersfield are finding life a lot tougher in their second year in the Premier League and I think Southampton could take advantage of that. The Saints will be flying following their won over Arsenal and that confidence and goal threat could be what wins this one.

Full Time Result – Southampton to win – 6/4

Correct Score – Huddersfield 0-1 Southampton – 13/2

  • Manchester City v Crystal Palace

Manchester City at home is almost a guaranteed win against any opponent at the moment and I can’t see how Crystal Palace will fare any better than most other teams City have faced. I am expecting a comfortable home win for City here.

Full Time Result – Manchester City to win 1/8

Correct Score – Manchester City 2-0 Crystal Palace – 7/1

  • Newcastle United v Fulham

A real relegation six-pointer and to me, this has a 1-0 home win written all over it. Fulham can’t defend but Newcastle are a little toothless in attack. Newcastle can defend, but Fulham’s attack is ok. I see those cancelling each other out and Newcastle taking one opportunity to grab another big win.

Full Time Result – Newcastle to win – 19/20

Correct Score – Newcastle United 1-0 Fulham – 7/1

  • West Ham v Watford

I’ve been really impressed with how West Ham have played in recent weeks racking up plenty of wins and I think they will do the same against a Watford side who are tough to beat at times, but do suffer from a lack of consistency.

Full Time Result – West Ham to win – 13/10

Correct Score – West Ham 3-1 Watford – 18/1

  • Cardiff City v Manchester United

With Jose Mourinho now sacked, Manchester United’s new manager will want a response in his first game in charge and I think he will get it against a Cardiff City team that have been doing well at home, but who now face a likely reinvigorated United with plenty to prove.

Full Time Result – Manchester United to win – 4/7

Correct Score – Cardiff City 1-3 Manchester United – 12/1

  • Everton v Tottenham

This will be a tough battle for both teams but I feel it will be Spurs that come out on top, just. Everton are much improved on last season, but they have struggled against the top six teams and even at home, I think they won’t have the quality defensively to deny Spurs a couple of goals.

Full Time Result – Tottenham to win – 23/20

Correct Score – Everton 1-2 Tottenham – 9/1

Matchday 19 Fixtures

  • Fulham v Wolves

Fulham fans will feel this is a must-win game against a fellow promoted side, but in truth I think Wolves are miles ahead of Fulham in terms of Premier League acumen and form and I am backing the visitors to land the win.

Full Time Result – Wolves to win – 5/4

Correct Score –  Fulham 1-2 Wolves – 9/1

  • Burnley v Everton

Everton will feel this is a three points for them if they perform at their best as Burnley have been very below par this season. Sean Dyche’s magic isn’t working this time around and I think Everton can capitalise on that.

Full Time Result – Everton to win – 5/6

Correct Score –  Burnley 0-2 Everton – 15/2

  • Crystal Palace v Cardiff City

Cardiff’s away performances are improving but I still think they are short of the real quality they need to pick up points on a regular basis. Palace’s home form hasn’t been great, but I feel they will get enough chances to take a couple and land a big three points.

Full Time Result – Crystal Palace to win – 4/6

Correct Score –  Crystal Palace 2-0 Cardiff City – 15/2

  • Leicester City v Manchester City

These teams play each other again for the second time in a week. Leicester managed a draw in normal time in the Carabao Cup, but I think City will play a much stronger team and Pep Guardiola’s men will, in turn, end up the victors.

Full Time Result – Manchester City to win – 3/10

Correct Score –  Leicester City 1-3 Manchester City – 11/1

  • Liverpool v Newcastle United

Liverpool’s fabulous start to the season means they are the big favourites here against their former boss Rafa Benitez charges. Newcastle will come to defend, but I think Liverpool will open them up and claim a straightforward win.

Full Time Result – Liverpool to win – 1/7

Correct Score –  Liverpool 3-0 Newcastle United – 13/2

  • Manchester United v Huddersfield

United’s new manager will want to put on a good display in front of the home fans and I think Huddersfield are about the best opponent he could have wished for. Don’t expect United to falter here as I think they will win this one very comfortably.

Full Time Result – Manchester United to win – 3/10

Correct Score – Manchester United 4-1 Huddersfield Town – 20/1

  • Tottenham v Bournemouth

I am a little worried Bournemouth’s great start may fizzle away and they could end up being dragged towards the foot of the table. A tough run of games for the Cherries continues away to Spurs and I think the home side will land the win.

Full Time Result – Tottenham to win – 1/3

Correct Score –  Tottenham 3-0 Bournemouth – 9/1

  • Brighton v Arsenal

Last time on the south coast Arsenal went down to a rare defeat but even against a Brighton side in decent form and doing well this season, I don’t envisage Arsenal’s pacy attack having too many problems against Brighton’s rather cumbersome centre backs.

Full Time Result – Arsenal to win – 3/5

Correct Score –  Brighton 1-3 Arsenal – 14/1

  • Watford v Chelsea

Chelsea’s form has been a little patch of late with some great performances mixed in with some below par ones but I feel that they will come good against Watford with Eden Hazard likely to be the man to put the Hornets to the sword.

Full Time Result – Chelsea to win – 8/13

Correct Score –  Watford 1-2 Chelsea – 8/1

  • Southampton v West Ham

I can’t see West Ham losing this game, even if Ralf Hassenhutl has got Southampton going, the Hammers are in great form and I see them scoring at least a couple against this leaky Saints defence, but Southampton are looking more feisty now so a draw is probably the best option.

Full Time Result – Draw – 9/4

Correct Score –  Southampton 2-2 West Ham – 12/1
