Premier League Preview After Massive VAR Controversy Last Weekend
Last weekend in the Premier League was one dominated by controversy and injury unfortunately and it all stemmed from the Merseyside derby clash at Goodison Park, which ended 2-2 but which does not tell half the story.
In the game, Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s appalling challenge not only should have resulted in a penalty and sending off, but meant that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk had to be substituted due to suspected (and now confirmed) cruciate knee ligament damage, ruling the key defender out for most likely, the remainder of the season.
There then followed more drama with Richarlison’s awful lunge at Thiago injuring the midfielder and handing the Brazilian a red card, before in injury time, Liverpool seemingly struck a winner only for the goal to be chalked off due to the most dubious and incomprehensible VAR decision to award offside that there has yet been. Little wonder then that so many fans wonder what is in store when hostilities resume this weekend after the midweek Champions League and Europa League games for some teams.

Premier League Matchday 6 Fixtures and Correct Score Tips
- Aston Villa v Leeds United
The action in the Premier League starts on Friday evening this week with unbeaten Aston Villa defending their 100% record at home to Leeds United. This should be a hugely interesting game, with Leeds coming into it off the back of a 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves, while Villa edged out Leicester in injury time. Despite their good start, I think Leeds can get something here. Tip – Aston Villa 1-1 Leeds United – 6/1.
- West Ham v Manchester City
Unbeaten in three, West Ham come into this game with real confidence after coming back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at Tottenham. Unfortunately for them, Manchester City have been a real bogey team for them over the last few years and City usually win this fixture by a hatful of goals. I can’t quite see that happening here, but I still think it will be the visitors coming away with the win. Tip – West Ham United 1-3 Manchester City – 11/1.
- Fulham v Crystal Palace
Fulham picked up their first point last weekend away to Sheffield United and they now face a Crystal Palace side that also picked up a point in their draw with Brighton. Palace for me have the much stronger squad of these two teams and I feel they have more matchwinners in their squad. As such, I think this could be another tough afternoon for Fulham. Tip – Fulham 0-1 Crystal Palace – 15/2.
- Manchester United v Chelsea
No doubt the biggest game of the weekend, United earned a 4-1 win away to Newcastle last week to kick start their season, while Chelsea conceded a late equaliser to only draw 3-3 with Southampton. However, I think Chelsea’s pacy attack could cause this United back line real problems and I feel at home, United do look susceptible against the counter attack and as such, I am backing the Londoners to get the result they need here. Tip – Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea – 10/1.
- Liverpool v Sheffield United
No Alisson, van Dijk and possibly Thiago, Liverpool could be forced to play a rather strange looking defensive team here, but against a Sheffield United side without a win this season and at home at Anfield, where they are unbeaten in three years, you would still expect the Reds, whose attack looked much sharper against Everton last week, to pick up a relatively straightforward win. Tip – Liverpool 3-1 Sheffield United – 11/1.
- Southampton v Everton
With no action taken against Jordan Pickford, he will be available for Everton for this tricky trip to a Southampton side that is in much better form now than they were a few weeks back. Three games without a defeat makes this a tricky game for Everton, but even without Richarlison, I think the Toffees still have enough to get something from this game. I am just not sure it will be a win. Tip – Southampton 1-1 Everton – 6/1.
- Wolves v Newcastle United
Wolves were something of a draw specialist last season but they have not drawn a game in five so far this to lie 6th in the table. Newcastle’s season has been as inconsistent as ever and while they have a potential matchwinner in Saint-Maximin, I think the home side has the edge in quality and consistency and as such, I’d expect them to win this one easily. Tip – Wolves 3-1 Newcastle United – 16/1.
- Arsenal v Leicester City
After a couple of defeats, both these teams will be hoping that they can get back to winning ways here or else they could drop right out of the battle at the top of the table. For me, Arsenal have been the better side this season, even despite Leicester’s huge win at Manchester City and with home advantage, I think the Gunners could just about edge this one, although I do feel it will be a very closely fought game. Tip – Arsenal 1-0 Leicester City – 9/1.
- Brighton v West Brom
With only one win between them this season, both these teams will be desperate for three points. They lie 16th and 17th in the table and of the two, I think Brighton have been the better team but not quite got the results that their performances have merited. West Brom are tough to beat but I see them struggling for goals at this level and I think the home side just has the edge here. Tip – Brighton 2-1 West Brom – 17/2.
- Burnley v Tottenham
The final game of the weekend sees Burnley trying to build on their 1 points so far against a Spurs side who were 3-0 up after 84 minutes against West Ham at home, and still only managed a draw. That loss of two points will hurt Jose Mourinho but I think his team will bounce back here to claim another big win on the road. Tip – Burnley 0-2 Tottenham – 15/2.
