Reel Rush Slot Review
Every now and then, a slot game comes along that tends to break the mould as to what we expect from a slot. It may have a ton of bonus features, or be set up in an unusual way, or have a very different theme or maybe it doesn’t even have reels at all. These games tend to be somewhat hit and miss, some being classics and some being flops. Reel Rush from NetEnt has been around since 2013 and in my view this is definitely one of the classics.
The backdrop to the slot is what appears to be some scenery taken from an old 8-bit classic game (Super Mario Bros was the game that immediately sprung to mind for me, but there will be others that it reminds people of). The soundtrack is also pleasingly simple and very much in the 8-bit style and if you are a lover of retro gaming, then this slot ticks all the right boxes.
Like most NetEnt games, you control the size of your bet by changing the Coin Value meter and the Level meter. Bets can be from as little as £0.50 up to a maximum bet of £100. The jackpot in the game is 480,000 coins, which is a considerable amount of money (£4,800 if you play for the minimum £0.01 coin value per spin).
Now we come to explaining how the Reel Rush slot is set up. What you have is a 5×5 reel set, but not all the symbols on the reels are displayed initially. When you start a standard spin, you will have a 1-3-5-3-1 reel set up with only the middle symbol displayed on the first and fifth reels, the middle three symbols on reels two and four and all five symbols are shown on the third reel.
The symbols on the reels are also very simple to follow and all seem to be based on edible items. There are five lower value symbols, which are the oval shaped sweeties that are coloured purple, green, yellow, orange and red. These offer pays from 5 coins up to 50 coins for five across the reels.
The higher value symbols are based on fruits and they are the plub, grapes, apple, lemon, pineapple and strawberry. You can win from 10 coins up to 1,000 coins by landing between three and five of these symbols across the reels.
There are no set pay lines on this slot and wins are achieved by matching symbols in three or more adjacent reels from the left to the right. However, one of the key features of the slot will kick in when you win on a spin and this alters how many potential ways to win you have, which we will explore in more detail in the Key Features section below.
You can play the Reel Rush slot right now at Leo Vegas Casino.
Reel Rush Slot Key Features
The first feature to note on the Reel Rush slot is that there is a Wild symbol. This is the brown star symbol and this can appear across the second to fifth reels in any position in any spin. It does not have any value of its own but can substitute for all other symbols in the game to create one or more winning lines.
Now we move onto the main feature of the slot which also links in with the Free Spins bonus game, so it is best that we review this feature in full.
When you spin the reels originally with the 1-3-5-3-1 reel set up, you may or may not trigger a win. If you don’t, then you simply spin again with the same reel set up, but when you trigger any win, you then trigger a re-spin but on this re-spin two additional spots on the first reel are revealed to make it a 3-3-5-3-1 reel set up.
Furthermore the number of ways to win on the slot increases to 135. After the re-spin, if you lose, the game goes back to the original set up, however if you win again, then you release two more symbols on the fifth reel for a 3-3-5-3-3 reel set up and a total of 405 ways to win.
The process then continues for a third, fourth and fifth respin with the reels changing to a 3-5-5-3-3, 3-5-5-5-3 and finally a 5-5-5-5-3 set up for each time. In addition, the number of ways to win increases too from 405 ways to win on the second respin up to 675 ways to win, 1125 ways to win and 1875 ways to win on the fifth respin.
If that fifth respin is a winner, then you enter the Free Spins bonus game when you get 8 Free Spins with all five reels fully exposed for the duration of your free spins and a massive 3125 ways to win in play on the reels.
It is such a simple way to play and the great thing is that the bonus is triggered relatively frequently given that you have the Wilds in play on the reels, which can help land more wins and the fact it seems to play as a more lower to medium variance slot, rather than a higher variance game.
In terms of bigger value wins, you can win some decent amounts simply from the Respins if you get on a good consecutive run and unlock more of the positions on the reel, especially the first couple of reels. The Wild symbol also proves useful on these runs as it can often trigger additional wins that help keep a winning run of spins continuing. That said, hitting the requisite number of consecutive wins to launch the Free Spins bonus can take some time.
When you do launch Free Spins, the rewards are somewhat mixed truth be told. On some occasions, the Free Spins bonus can be very lucrative and see you enhance an already decent sized win into a much bigger value one, but also you can have a run of four or five free spins when nothing turns into a winner and you end the bonus game with roughly the same amount of cash as when you started it.[wp-review id=”2170″]
