Two Huge Top Six Clashes to Enjoy This Weekend in the Bundesliga
After a successful if somewhat unusual first round of games since the resumption of the season, the Bundesliga is most definitely back and while other leagues around Europe are set to restart their season over the coming weeks, with the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A looking at a June restart date, the action continues in Germany with a cracking selection of games this weekend.
That is because two of the matches pits two of the top six teams in the table against each other. Third placed Borussia Moenchengladbach face fifth placed Bayer Leverkusen with both teams in great form, while sixth placed Wolfsburg welcome second placed Borussia Dortmund in what is a key clash for the visitors, ahead of their midweek game on Tuesday night against league leaders Bayern Munich.

Let’s now quickly review how last weekend went in the Bundesliga before we take a look at the two top six clashed in the Bundesliga in a bit more detail.
Bundesliga Results – Matchday 26
- Hoffenheim 0-3 Hertha Berlin
- Augsburg 1-2 Wolfsburg
- Dortmund 4-0 Schalke 04
- Dusseldorf 0-0 Paderborn
- Red Bull Leipzig 1-1 SC Freiburg
- Frankfurt 1-3 Borussia Moenchengladbach
- FC Cologne 2-2 Mainz
- Union Berlin 0-2 Bayern Munich
- Werder Bremen 1-4 Bayer Leverkusen
The four teams involved in the two top six clashes this week all registered fine wins last weekend. Borussia Moenchengladbach were 3-1 winners away to Eintracht Frankfurt, but Bayer Leverkusen went one better in their 4-1 away defeat of Werder Bremen, who now look in serious danger of going down for the first time in many years.
Dortmund were comfortable 4-0 winners of the Reiverderby over Schalke 04 while sixth placed Wolfsburg battled back well after going a goal down to earn a 2-1 win over Augsburg thanks to a late strike.
The results above see Bayern remain top still four points ahead of Dortmund who are now two ahead of Borussia Moenchengladbach, who moved above Red Bull Leipzig into third thanks to Leipzig’s draw at home to Freiburg. After Leipzig come Bayer Leverkusen who are now just a point behind, with Wolfsburg in sixth a little way off the pace of the top five.
Borussia Moenchengladbach v Bayer Leverkusen
- Venue – Borussia Park
- Kick Off Time: 2.30pm
- Borussia M Form – WWLWDWDWLD
- Bayer Lev Form – WWDWWWLWWW
- League Positions – Borussia M (3rd), Bayer Lev (5th)
- Last Match – Bayer Lev 1-2 Borussia Moench. (2nd Nov 2019)
This game has plenty riding on it. A win for Leverkusen could see them jump up to third in the table, potentially moving just a point behind Dortmund in second, while a defeat could see Leverkusen four points off Red Bull Leipzig above them in fourth.
Similarly, a win for Borussia could see them move above Dortmund in the table, while a defeat could potentially see them drop down into fifth place in the table. With just the top four guaranteed a Champions League spot, the stakes could not be higher, especially with both teams still having hopes of catching Bayern Munich at the top of the table too.
Of the two teams it is Bayer Leverkusen’s form that has been the better over the last 10 Bundesliga games, but both sides looked well prepared in their games last weekend recording excellent wins on the road. Both teams have a very similar record and as such I am fully expecting this game to be a close one.
I think Leverkusen may have the edge in terms of the potential individual match winners, but I feel Borussia Moenchengladbach are the better organised team and with home advantage, I feel that they will be the team to end up on the right side of the scoreline here.
- Borussia Moenchengladbach to win – 13/10
- Correct Score – Borussia MG 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen – 17/2
- Anytime Goalscorer – Alassane Plea (Borussia M) – 13/8.
Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund
- Venue – Volkswagen Arena
- Kick Off Time: 2.30pm
- Wolfsburg Form – WDDWWDWLLL
- Dortmund Form – WWWWWLWWW
- League Positions – Wolfsburg (6th), B.Dortmund (2nd)
- Last Match – B.Dortmund 3-0 Wolfsburg (2nd Nov 2019)
Wolfsburg are unbeaten in their last seven Bundesliga games but they are going to face a stern test against a Dortmund side that know two wins in their next two games (they face leaders Bayern Munich at home on Tuesday) could well blow the title race wide open.
The visitors were superb in demolishing neighbours Schalke 04 4-0 last weekend and the depth of quality in the squad that Dortmund possess is astonishing, with Jaden Sancho only coming on as a substitute and a number of other quality players either missing out altogether, or only making the bench.
Erling Haaland also got back to goalscoring ways once again and while Wolfsburg earned a battling 2-1 win away to Augsburg, Dortmund are several levels above Augsburg and it is hard to make a case for the home side to earn a victory here, even on their home soil.
For me Dortmund have all the advantages in this game and I expect them to earn the win to keep up the pressure on Bayern at the top of the table.
- Borussia Dortmund to win – 7/10
- Correct Score – Wolfsburg 1-3 Borussia Dortmund – 12/1
- Anytime Goalscorer – Julian Brandt (Dortmund) – 9/4
