Top Spring Sports Events 2021
March 14th to April 5th – March Madness
72 of the top College Basketball teams will battle it out from March 14th to April 5th in the March Madness tournament. Starting with Selection Sunday on the 14th, it is a straight knockpout tournament to secede the new NBAAC Champions.
Two teams are the hot favourites this year as both are unbeaten so far in the regular season, Gonzaga (13/4) and Baylor (7/2) and experts suggest that there is little to decide between the two teams heading into the tournament in Indianapolis.
March 16th to March 19th – Cheltenham Festival
One of the biggest horse racing meets of the year starts on March 16th with four days of great action over the jumps planned at the Cheltenham Festival. A whole host of top races featuring all the top horses in jump racing will be contested across the four days, culminating in Friday’s Cheltenham Gold Cup.
March 27th – Dillian Whyte v Alexander Povetkin Heavyweight Boxing
After Alexander Povetkin’s surprise win over Dillian Whyte last year, the English fighter has activated his clause for a rematch and that will take place on March 27th. There is a huge amount at stake for the winner, including a potential shot at the winner of a Anthony Joshua v Tyson Fury bout which is being planned for later in 2020.
Defeat though could see either fighter pushed out of contention in what is becoming a very strong looking heavyweight division.
March 28th – Start of the new Formula 1 Season
After the first few races of the year were delayed, the 2021 Formula 1 season will get underway on the 28th March in Bahrain. A total of 23 races have been planned for the 2021 season where Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes will be going for a world record eighth World Driver’s Championship.
With all the new cars being previewed for the new season over the next few weeks, the excitement will build to that first race in Bahrain and it will be interesting to see whether any team or driver can match the dominance of Hamilton and Mercedes over the course of the season.
April 5th to April 22nd – Premier League Darts
The first stage of the Premier League Darts competition will take place across two sets of dates in April behind closed doors. The first set of games will be played from April 5th to the 9th inclusive, with the second set of matches from April 19th to the 22nd. Those nine nights of action will determine who makes it through into the second phase of the tournament, which organisers hope will be played in May in front of spectators.
Michael ven Gerwen is the 11/5 favourite to win the tournament, with World Champion Gerwyn Price a 9/4 shot and Peter Wright 9/2. Others to look out for are Gary Anderson and Dmitri van den Bergh (both 10/1), Jose De Sousa (16/1), Nathan Aspinall (20/1) and Jonny Clayton (28/1). Rob Cross is the 40/1 outsider.
April 8th to April 11th – The Masters
The Masters was only played last November and world number 1 Dustin Johnson landed his first Green Jacket by landing the victory. He will be back to defend that title this year and he is the favourite in the early betting to do just that at 11/2 with bet365.
Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy come next at 10/1 and in what is a stellar field of star names there is a who’s who of top golfing talent also around these prices including Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Spieth and many more. UK hopes seem to rely on the likes of Justin Rose, Tyrell Hatton and Paul Casey.
It is always one of the most exciting golfing weekends of the year and this year’s event back at its usual place in the calendar, will be no different.
April 10th – Grand National
The most popular horse race of the year in terms of bets placed takes place on April 10th. The Grand National at Aintree is a sporting institution in the UK and this year, Tiger Roll (20/1) will be going for a third win of the race, and a chance of Aintree legend status alongside the only other three-time winner of the race, Red Rum.
However, he faces plenty of top-quality opposition in the 40-horse race including the current favourite Cloth Cap (14/1) with Secret Reprieve (16/1) another that is strongly fancied in the ante post markets.
April 17th – World Snooker Championship Starts
Ronnie O’Sullivan will be amongst the favourites to win the World Snooker Championship. The current champion has won this trophy six times in his career and was an 18-8 winner of Kyren Wilson in last year’s final.
The Rocket is a 7/2 chance with bet365 right now to win the tournament, but he is second favourite behind the in-form Judd Trump (11/4). Neil Robertson (6/1) and Mark Selby (13/2) are both rated as two players also in with an exceptional chance of landing another World title trophy.
This should be a very open tournament given that recent snooker events have seen some unexpected winners, such as the 81st ranked Jordan Brown winning the Welsh Open. Could we see a big-priced winner at the Crucible this year?
April 29th to 1st May – NFL Draft
Taking us through to May are the three days of the 2021 NFL Draft. The annual selection of the best college prospects to become professionals in the NFL begins with the First Round picks on Thursday 29th, followed by Rounds 2 and 3 on the 30th April and then the remaining four rounds on the 1st May.
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is rated as the 1/80 favourite to be selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars first in the draft. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is the 14/1 second favourite while the Heisman Trophy winner, Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith, is a 66/1 shot.
