Copa America Semi Final
Argentina v Colombia
The second semifinal in the Copa America kicks off tonight at 2am on Wednesday morning UK time and it sees arguably the most in form team in the tournament, Argentina, taking on a Colombia side who have reached the semis despite winning just one game in the tournament thus far.
Inspired by Lionel Messi, the Argentineans were the quality side in Group A, winning three of their four games and drawing the other, before they despatched a decent Ecuador side 3-0 in the quarterfinals.
Having scored four goals and contributed four assists, Neymar has outshone any other player at the tournament thus far, including Brazilian ace Neymar and while the player may be out of contract at the moment, it has not let it affect his performances for his country in any way.
With a talented supporting cast of attacking players including Rodrigo De Paul, Lautaro Martinez, Sergio Aguero and Alejandro Dario Gomez, Messi’s team have more than enough quality to get the job done here.
Their opponents are the physically imposing and very well organised Colombia. Having beaten Uruguay on penalties in the last round, they squeezed into the group stage as the third best team in Group B behind Brazil and Peru but displayed great defensive fortitude throughout the group stage and in their quarterfinal tie.
However, even with a tight back line, it is hard to see Colombia keeping Messi out for a full 90 minutes here. As such, here are the markets I would be looking to back for this game.
Our Tips – Argentina v Colombia
- Full Time Result – Argentina to win – 5/6
- Correct Score – Argentina to win 2-0 – 13/2
- Anytime Goalscorer – Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 10/11
Euro 2020 Semi Finals
Spain v Italy
The first of the semifinals in the Euros kicks off tonight at 8pm, with two of the biggest names in European football clashing in the first of the two semi finals to be played at Wembley.
Having come through Group E as the second place team behind Sweden, Spain found their goalscoring boots to net five against Slovakia and Croatia after a slow start, but they were slowed down once again by Switzerland in the quarterfinals and required a victory by penalties to take them through to the next stage.
There they will face an Italian side who have won all of the games they have played in the tournament so far, albeit they did require extra time to get the better of Austria in their Round of 16 tie. Three group wins over Turkey, Switzerland and Wales and that win over Austria was followed by a superb win over Belgium to reach this stage.
Roberto Mancini has overseen the longest unbeaten record in Italian football history with their 33 undefeated games so far but he will be wary of taking on a Spain side that have a better record against Italy than the Italians do against Spain.
However, when you look at the performances of the two teams in the tournament so far, it is hard to make a realistic case for anything other than an Italian win here, although it would not be the first time the Spanish would cause an upset against this particular opponent.
Our Tips – Spain v Italy
- Full Time Result – Italy to win – 7/5
- Correct Score – Italy to win 2-1 – 10/1
- Anytime Goalscorer – Lorenzo Insigne (Italy) – 13/5
Denmark v England
The final game of the semi finals this week is also taking place at Wembley, although England are designated the away team for this game. The Three Lions will renew their rivaly with a Denmark side that they last played in the Nations League in 2019, drawing 0-0 in Copenhagen before losing at home to the Danes to a Christian Eriksen penalty.
After a traumatic start to the tournament that also saw them lose their first two games, Denmark have bounced back to form winning all three of their subsequent games to reach the semifinals, that includes four-goal wins over Russia and Wales before a solid 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.
Similarly, England started the tournament relatively slowly, scoring just two goals in the group stage, but that was enough to top their group. However, a 2-0 win over their great rivals Germany in the Round of 16 really got Gareth Southgate’s team’s confidence sky high and they followed that up with a fabulous performance in a 4-0 win over Ukraine in Rome on Saturday.
Along with Italy, these two teams have been arguably the most consistent performers in the tournament, particularly in the knockout phase and while England are favourites, they will know that Denmark pose a real threat having played them just a couple of years back.
That said, with home advantage, it is hard to back against England here and having not conceded a goal in the tournament so far, I think that defensive stubbornness will be the key to the win here.
Our Tips – Denmark v England
- Full Time Result – England to win – 8/11
- Correct Score – England to win 2-0 – 13/2
- Anytime Goalscorer – Harry Kane (England) – 21/20
